Lovebus wins 3 Wavetrophies

  • By ivovandenbrink

The Lovebus was very succesful in the 8 day Wavetrophy through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Joost drove with his family during the last 3 days and won 3 trophies: one on ‘most comfortable electric car’, one for ‘most attractive electric car’ and a trophy for not making it until the end. Heartbreaking: the bus broke down 500m before the finish line, in Seebodenalp on mount Rigi. During the steep hairpin bends one of the axles flopped out of the transmission: an old school problem of the oldtimer Volkswagen. Easy to repair once at home, but frustrating to the bone while you’re in the moment. Joost had a wonderful rally in his bus though, and it made a stunning impression in every city it entered.

This oldtimer Porsche does the Tesla range in style

  • By ivovandenbrink

Take a look at this beauty: a converted oldtimer Porsche. Built from the ground up with a plastic kit and converted with a 100kW drive train and 70kWh battery. This beauty does the Tesla range, over 400km, in style.

The drivetrain is highly customizable: coaxial drives powered by one or two motors up to an electric all wheel drive will satisfy your every need in AC propulsion. Pick from a range of 100kW to 4 x 150kW to suit your wish for maximum driving performance. Regenerative braking, traction control and torque vectoring included. Do you like the 550 Spyder better? This body can be placed on the same chassis. Great!

The assembly of the kit-car and the conversion to electric is done by our friends from TURN–E from Germany. The batteries are assembled at the facility of Europe‘s biggest battery supplier, Batterie Montage Zentrum, BMZ.

Electric Überbug hits Furkapass

  • By ivovandenbrink

The 8 day Wavetrophy from Stuttgart to Zürich went over the Furkapass today. And the electric Überbug from Rebbl made it! The Curtis controller got a little hot, but with a little extra cooling from the permafrost all went very smooth. Take a look at the breathtaking scenery.

Überbug converted from DC to AC

  • By ivovandenbrink

In preparation for the biggest e-rally in the world, the Wavetrophy, we decided to convert the Überbug from AC to DC. How else will we be able to drive of a 3000m Alp? We had some wrestling with software, upgrades and settings, and even had to bypass 10 cells (out of 110) to get even the biggest Curtis to work. But it runs like an angel now. Nice cooperation with our friends at New Electric.

Less torque at low rpm compared to DC, but more at high rpm. And a hefty regen, which will be nice in the Alps!

Bootcamp Wavetrophy: Uberbug conversion to AC

  • By ivovandenbrink

In preparation of the Wavetrophy we analyzed the field test of the Lovebus and took a good look at the breaking system of the Uberbug. It needed modern disk breaks before, to get it approved by the RDW. But we expect going up and down the Alps by 3000m within an hour, and this will be stressful! Also, the range of the car will go from over 200km on a normal surface, to about 40km going constantly uphill. So the Uberbug needs regenerative breaking going downhill no matter what.

This is with pain in our heart though, since the bug has a wonderful low torque, the DC system provides a lot of power for you money. Swapping the powerful Soliton1 for a small Curtis controller does hurt a bit.

But we’re open to new experiences, and in the next few days we’ll test the AC drivetrain. We will analyze the trade off between great power and regenerative breaking thoroughly, and keep you posted of course!

Bootcamp Wave Trophy: how to pass the Alps

  • By ivovandenbrink

Converting an old VW Bus into a full electric car is a challenge, but by now we got a little used to this phenomena. The vintage white walled wheels have rolled more than 50.000 electric km’s, along highways and scenic alternatives. It all sounds like a good preparation for the 1600km’s of the WAVE trophy. So it seems from the perspective of a lowlander……..
